Click To Play Just back from a cool gig up at Harvard…the first of four speeches or presentations I will give, in as many cities, on the subject of social enterprise and nonprofit political engagement. Most think the two are two distinct paths—not me. The ONLY way for us to move forward—whether through traditional charity, or via a more modern approach, will be to seek out and support politicians who “get it.” And by get it, I mean leaders who are willing (amongst other things) to look at the tax code and work to incentivize… Continue reading »

At the Corner of 17th, Broadway and History

At the Corner of 17th, Broadway and History

Click To Play I’m in Indianapolis, speaking at the annual meeting of one of my favorite community kitchens in America, Second Helpings. Before I head over, I stopped by the corner of 17th and Broadway, where Robert Kennedy gave what is one of America’s greatest speeches, on one of America’s darkest days–April 4th, 1968…the day Dr. King was assasinated in Memphis. I urge you to listen to that speech and join me in thinking about the road we’ve been on, and the journey ahead. And if you are ever in Indianapolis, stop by and visit… Continue reading »

Riding the Wave with McCain (and Katie)

Riding the Wave with McCain (and Katie)

We jumped into a throng of McCain supporters, trying to get a moment of time with the Arizona Senator, as he left the front steps of the state Capitol in Concord. Out front–an old friend from the early days of the Kitchen, former Board member Katie Couric. We caught up quick and then I grabbed an all to brief moment with the Candidate. To be fair, the ride was rolling and he only had a moment. You’ll see more of him when we close out the Primary Project on Wednesday and create a compilation video… Continue reading »

Monday- Grabbing Giuliani

Monday- Grabbing Giuliani

You’ve got to hand it to Monica Zulauf, the ED of the YWCA here in Manchester…she KNOWS how to get the job done. Mayor Giuliani has been one of the most elusive of the candidates. Today we learned that he was going to be at Jackie’s, a VERY small diner down on Main Street in Nashua, so we bolted out the door, and two tolls later were jammed into a key position, right at the front door, and it paid off BIGTIME. We got a solid answer from the candidate–check it OUT. Click To Play… Continue reading »

SUNDAY – Getting Personal with Sen. Edwards

SUNDAY – Getting Personal with Sen. Edwards

I’ve been really trying to steer clear of asking questions at these events, being an “outsider” and all. But I was going solo this afternoon, and while listening to a VERY passionate Sen. John Edwards, I felt compelled to jump into the mix. You can tell from his response that he thought I was asking about hunger and poverty, versus the role of the entire sector, but his reply really spoke to his knowledge of the issues that human service providers like DCCK face everyday.
