Nonprofits and the Economic Meltdown

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Like a scene right out of Kill Bill, Vol. I, the nonprofit sector had one of its legs cut off last week-  but the cut happened so fast, and it was so clean that they haven’t even felt it yet. But make no mistake—a huge source of revenue just vanished. What’s worse—the ripple effect will force other sources of revenue to dry up. Local governments just lost a TON of cash flow. Mayor Bloomberg said, this weekend on Meet the Press, that he expects NYC to see a 12% drop in revenue in 09—in a state that posted a $5 billion deficit in 08.

This is huge. Legislation designed to poach nonprofit assets (i.e. property taxes) is coming. A new wave of folks needing basics like food and shelter is coming, particularly if pensions and social security dry up.

ALL of this is on the line—right now. Where are you?  What are you doing to respond to all this?

Join the V3 Campaign and get into this dialogue. There is no safe corner, folks…this is it. Right here, right now…join.

McCain-Obama Service Nation Forum Sheesh—that’s all you got!!!!

Friday, September 12th, 2008

I don’t know about you, but I was pretty bummed by last nights limited dialogue about service. Really—millions of regular folks are OUT THERE, right now, all over America, rolling up their sleeves and kicking ass. In every university, 90% of the freshman class have performed community service—many for over 5 years. 80 Million Boomers are rolling down the road and they are ready to contribute time, energy and ideas. Come on, people…let’s get this organized and ROAR forward as a country.

Please.

If you want to be part of making that happen–join the V3 Campaign  and let’s let candidates know we’re ready for some big, fat steps forward.

Rocking Scotland

Monday, September 8th, 2008

I’m just back from a staggeringly cool visit to the UK, which centered around the Social Enterprise World Forum, sponsored by the Glasgow based group CEIS.

Man oh man…where to begin? I met so many insanely, profoundly, impressively amazing people while there. Liam from Wavelength who is working to get a dialogue going between visionary people/companies who are rocking the planet—people like Sophie, who runs Divine Chocolate. I also listened to author and thinker Charlie Leadbeater, who wrote an amazing book named We-Think…the dude is a monster on new ideas!!!!

I also met Phil Hope MP, the UK’s Minister for the Third Sector. His job is to facilitate the connections between nonprofits, social enterprise groups and NGO’s with government and business. Seriously….they have a cabinet level Minster for this…and where are WE here in the US?!?!?!?!?!??!

I met tons of amazing social entrepreneurs from Syria, Chile, Brazil, South Africa, Australia…..they didn’t call it the world forum for nothing.

Anyway….the next one is going to be held in Australia, and it’s being put together (as I type) by Social Ventures Australia….make sure to check them out as the months roll by—if you are into Social E, then you’ll need to be there next year!!!

Big fat props to the pioneering leadership over at KIBBLE who played a HUGE roll in making this event roar.

And….if anybody EVER invites you to Scotland—GO!!!!!

More soon.
