The aging of the Meals on Wheels volunteers (your mom) is what got me thinking about the subject of "what comes next?". That entire system is aging out, so now is the time for two critical discussions...in this order:

1. How do we VALUE our elders (the Greatest Generation) in America?

2. Now, what does the meal system of the future look like?

I'm way into this.

ALWAYS glad to hear your thoughts, Bill!!

Two points - it's not the baby boomers who need the delivery of meals options, it's their parents - those of "The Greatest Generation". The fastest growing demographic cohort are people over 100.

Secondly, one of the problems of meal delivery is the fact that people like to have them delivered around mealtime (Surprise!). The problem that a lot of Meals on Wheels programs are having is that their original model of drivers (e.g. stay at home moms) is no longer an accurate picture of our society. My mom, (one of the members of the Greatest Generation) stopped being a meals on wheels volunteer when SHE TURNED 80 because she didn't feel comfortable driving anymore. This is an area where corporate volunteering and college volunteering could both make a difference by allowing more schedule flexibility during the day. -- Let an employee volunteer for 2 hours from 11AM to 1PM once a month, or even once a week. Even if the requirement is that that person still put in 40 hours, what makes the meal delivery job possible, is the organizational flexibility.

While the silence on the subject of aging boomers is scary deafening (save for great thinking like Civic Venture’s Marc Freedman, who wrote an op-ed yesterday on the coming “Posterity Deficit”-- http://bit.ly/53LcM6) it provides an amazingly lucrative opportunity for bold social entrepreneurs. Seriously---public health is an incredible nexus point for social E. I’ll look forward to your blog post, Jack…and thanks for reading.

You are, of course, correct. We have an aging in place crisis coming like a tidal wave and it is being largely ignored.

I was just at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas where the big exhibits were 3D TV sets, eBooks, and tablet computers. None of these have any real importance to the boomer generation who doesn't want to move into assisted living.

At CES, for the second year, there was a section called Silvers Summit with associated exhibits. This was a small step in the right direction in giving space to aging in place products. I will be writing on my blog at www.Levaunt.wordpress.com about some of the products shown at CES that will help make a difference to seniors and their caregivers. However, as you point out, if the home isn't modified appropriately, products still are not going to defer the move to assisted living.
